Dame Sue Bourne DBE
Sue Bourne has been in special education for 25 years. She is currently headteacher at The Avenue School in Reading. The school provides highly specialised education and care techniques for 120 pupils aged 2 to 19. Sue leads the 140 staff working at the school to support children with complex special educational needs and their families.
Sue has been an NLE for six years and has helped the school to achieve a number of major awards, including Specialist Status for Performing Arts and The International School Award. This involved developing international links with The Sunshine School in St Vincent and the Grenadines and setting up a joint project with three SVG special schools.
In 2011 Sue won an award for UK International Co-ordinator of the Year from the British Council and HSBC. Sue was also a member of the DfE Special Schools Advisory Group, tasked with helping to set up special school academies. She continues to work closely with the DfE special school academies team to engage others with the programme.
Sue joined the NCTL Fellowship Programme in 2014 and worked with other system leaders on the commission challenge: ‘How do we recruit and retain outstanding teachers?’
